ABOUT AMAZÔNIA

The Amazon rainforest is almost mythical in its richness and diversity, and music inspired by it is often the same. On AMAZÔNIA, composer Miguel Kertsman captures the awe-inspiring beauty and fragility of one of the world’s natural wonders and pays homage to his homeland of Brazil. Featuring four of his earlier symphonic works, the album peers into the budding composer’s early career, already rich with genre experimentation and musical storytelling. Kertsman’s juxtaposition of Brazilian folk tradition with orchestral composition bends the rules of classical, creating a worldly sound with universal resonance.

QUOTES

“His (Kertsman’s) music is more than just sound: It is simultaneously a plea, a biography, and a critique of our relationship with nature.”

– Poppress.de, Germany, 2026

“Kertsman shares with his older compatriot (Villa-Lobos)  an appealingly intuitive approach to composition. ‘The freedom in his instrumental writing, heard most obviously in the Chamber Symphony No 1, Acorda!”

– Gramophone Magazine, United Kingdom

“brilliant… the full breadth of orchestral drama with a definite touch of exotica. There is a genetic relation between Maestros Villa-Lobos and Kertsman that, at least in Kertsman”s early period, brings him into the picture as a successor, an extender of a Brazilian orchestral heritage”

– Grego Applegate Edwards,
Classical Modern Music Review
, USA

… meditative, colorful music, rich in ideas

– International Classical Music Awards, Switzerland

“immensely attractive music…imaginative and varied… orchestral lavishness… there are sublime moments of epic grandeur here…”

“the richness of orchestral sound and the first movement unfolds broad melodies in the orchestra over chugging Brazilian rhythms, with the flute dancing merrily above it. There’s an expansiveness in the writing and a natural dramatic touch…”

– Fanfare Magazine, USA

“Music with passionate sounds envelops its listeners… brilliantly played.”

– Oberösterreichische Nachrichten, Austria

“Alternately Copland-esque and dissonantly challenging, the ballsy dynamics defining these orchestral pieces by Brazilian-American composer Miguel Kertsman bridge a virtual gap between modern classical and progressive/classical rock.”

– John Collinge, Progression Magazine, USA

“The music is haunting and beautiful. It conjured up images of wind-swept castles and haunted marshes.”

– John Breeden, Game Industry News, USA

Airplay on NPR and WFMT radio networks (USA), BBC Classics, Brazil (Radio Cultura), Austria (ORF Ö1), France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, etc.
